This Is Going To Be A Trip

Each year when we are coming home from our annual vacation/family reunion in Ohio I vow that the next year we will pack light. In truth I could get by with a toothbrush, a razor, two pairs of jeans, two pairs of shorts, underwear, socks, sandals, a few tee shirts and tennis shoes...plus a shirt without any slogan on it for church. Heck, I could probably pack everything I need into a WalMart bag.

I can guarantee though that we will lug more stuff with us onto the airplane than I knew we owned, sometimes we even take empty suitcases knowing we'll not be able to fit everything we brought with us back into the luggage we've crammed full for the trip there.

It's not like we're going camping...everywhere we go in Ohio there will be modern conveniences, including washing machines and dryers...but we will over-pack. We'll pack for warm weather, for cold weather, for wet weather, and for the Rapture - you can't be too careful.

This lunacy is something I've learned to accept, if not embrace.

I'm as guilty as Amy, although Amy is the only one who insists on packing food - she does a lot of cooking while we're on vacation and "you can't get real food" in Ohio. We once took a "carry-on" bag full of frozen meat on our trip - you know you're a redneck if your carry-on luggage is a cooler full of fajita meat. That carry-on luggage didn't fit in any carry-on compartments by the way so we had to beg and cajole various flight attendants along the way into stashing our meat in secret places they apparently have on aircraft for people who travel with mini-refrigerators. I felt certain someone was going to double check to make sure our last name wasn't Dahmer, but no one batted an eyelash or even asked if my middle name was Wayne...apparently traveling with frozen meat is not the most absurd thing airline personnel have seen. Yes, that disturbs me too but I'd rather not dwell on it.

We leave for Ohio very early on Tuesday and Amy is now starting to throttle up into panic mode. There are lists being made, piles of clothes are appearing, luggage is being dragged out from closets and the garage amid periodic tearful outbursts that we need to clean the house before we leave - something that would be a lot easier if we didn't spend these next few days tearing apart the house packing. That, by the way, is something I have learned only to think, not say aloud.

We're making plans to pay bills, avoid paying bills, get a fist full of traveler's checks and doing our mental best to reach that state of bliss where the economics of taking a vacation are no longer a factor - some folks think of this as denial...I prefer not to think about it at all.

Soon one of my favorite parts of the ordeal will begin - Amy will start putting spices into baggies. I'm not really certain as to why - but presumably they don't sell "real spices" in Ohio either. Amy will stuff baggies with white powders as well as green leafy substances and then cram the baggies into our luggage - no doubt mine. This will, of course, provoke some sleepless moments for me as I envision being pulled aside by gruff airport security officers who will soon introduce me and every one of my body cavities to a drug sniffing dog named Bruno. Amy packs food, I leave space for paranoia.

This year will be easier though...we don't have to kennel the dogs, or stop the mail because Erin is staying at the house. Amy tried to coax her into coming with us, but somehow the thought of spending a week or two with 18 or more complete strangers who have relatives who pack meat in their luggage didn't appeal to her as much as having a nice big house to herself and three smelly dogs - washing the dogs before we go is on a list somewhere I'm sure - there's no accounting for common sense.

Since Amy is working today and tomorrow and I'm working right up until the moment we have to leave for the airport at 4 a.m. Tuesday the frazzle of preparing for flight should intensify exponentially in the next 72 hours or so.

During those precious few hours we'll make a mad rush to the grocery store to buy food to snack on during our flight - this actually isn't crazy since airlines now offer you a microscopic bag of miniature pretzels as sustenance if you're not traveling completely around the world...in first class - as well as food for Erin, food for the dogs, and of course the "real food" that they don't sell in Ohio...like tortillas, refried beans, enchilada sauce and meat.

Eventually we'll start cramming stuff into suitcases with mad abandon, the idea of folding clothes and packing sensibly will fall by the wayside faster than a statement of fidelity from Bill Clinton. Somewhere in the process I will be asked to sit on a suitcase to make it close - if the situation becomes dire enough it may actually be a request to sit next to Amy on the suitcase while we both jump up and down while saying silent prayers that white powder and green leafy stuff doesn't start spewing out the sides.

I'll pack enough books, magazines and crossword puzzles to keep us and the entire population of Delaware entertained. I've never been to Delaware by the way...I don't have enough luggage for a trip that far.

And then, sooner than we can believe, Tuesday morning will arrive. Lacking all confidence in our sense of over-preparedness we will throw caution to the wind and leave. The dogs will no doubt still smell, the house will probably be in shambles, and Erin will be giving serious consideration to changing the locks while we're gone.

Oh, Michael, I am laughing so hard my side hurts at the imagery this post provoked and mostly because I can so very much relate to it! heh.

I really needed a good laugh and I thank you for sharing these packing antics with us.

I hope you two have a wonderful vacation! This post was a real trip! :)

Just hope I'll be able to get off my sick bed long enough to pack my stuff and get in the car to leave. I haven't even unpacked most of my stuff from Venezuela. Oh, the joys of international travel....luggage the size of Alaska and various horrible diseases. Funtimes. :)

This is a jewel of an essay!

Once my mom and dad booked a trip to Vegas, and they let about a week after Mom had bunion surgery. Dad never let her live it down that she hoisted 2 gallon jugs of white vinegar onto the plane, the doctor-ordered foot soak, because she said "You can't get vinegar in Vegas." Needless to say, the vinegar "stayed in Vegas."

One other note: My daughter's boyfriend's last name is Dahmer. But his middle name is not Wayne, and he's black, so that helps. He insists the pronunciation is DAY-mer, also... :)

Have a safe and enjoyable trip, and hey, nothing wrong with packing your own sustenance. Just cook the meat before you eat it. If you must cook on the plane, share with the flight attendants. :)

I could have sworn that I picked up a couple of cans of refried beans at the base commissary last week....there is no Mexican left in Ohio??? Gosh, could Amy pack me some taco shells, and burrito wraps??? We would like do eat Mexican..... say this Thursday??? lol

IN MY DEFENSE:

I don't do a lot of cooking while we're there... I do ALL the cooking! Everyone has their thing to do at Lakeside. Some read, some play tennis, some lounge on the dock and play "let's get tan." I play shuffleboard and I cook.

The don't sell skirt steak in Dayton... just flank steak. NOT the same. If you ask the meat dept. for skirt steak, they look at you like you're crazy. And try to get tripe up north! OK, I don't take tripe, nor do I eat it.

You can only get flour tortillas in pkgs of 10 in Ohio they're awful. And one looks in vain for that first bag of corn tortillas. I buy 2 bags of 50 flour and a bag of 100 corn tortillas at Sam's. That allows for fajitas, enchiladas, and breakfast tacos. I probably won't do fajitas this year since skirt steak is too expensive right now. But if Wal-Mart has it on sale tomorrow, I'm buying it!

Yes, you can get enchilada sauce and refried beans in Ohio, but they charge you double there what they do here -- I guess it's a gringo penalty or something.

And I pack my spices for spaghetti & other dishes because I HAVE them and I pre-measure them so I don't have to do it when I get there.

So quit yer whining and eat your supper.

....so, "skirt" steak comes from female cows??? I'm so confused....LOL.....I'm sorry that you have to do all the cooking. I can relate! Usually when I go home for July 4th, I'm the one tied down in the kitchen with my Mom making all the food that the "other's" are going to enjoy....I also get stuck with clean up....sigh.....MM writes so funny, it is hard not to poke a little fun at your expense.....Hey, you should read my blog of late....I am the "butt" of everyones jokes lately...llp

I love to cook... and I don't have to clean up. So I'm in hog heaven :-)

Speaking of hogs... the year we toted the skirt steak and other frozen things, we also had a pork roast that came from a hog named Clover. I made BBQ out of her. Clover came in 8th place at the county fair. I worked with the mom of the kid who raised the thing and I bought 1/4 of it. So I hauled Clover to Ohio along with the petticoat steak :-)

Amy--I'm glad that you enjoy your role in the gathering! For three years in a miserable row, my in-laws invited the whole lot of us (which was only 10) to their vacation house on the lake for 4 days or so. All the cooking fell to me because they "can't make anything that anyone would actually eat.... (They're also not "hospital people"--I think I'm detecting a pattern!) I would make lasagne, enchiladas, etc. ahead and freeze them to take in coolers, but I still slaved through the whole trip.

On the last day of the 4th "reunion," I said "Never again!" The next summer, the invitation went out and I had to stick to my guns, cause they sure weren't about to pitch in. If I liked cooking like you do, it would have been different. I don't love it, but I am good at it. Anyway, I've never regretted just saying NO!!!
